Regardless of the exam or specific situation that an individual is studying for, it is essential for an individual to establish a series of study goals that the individual wishes to accomplish. These goals, as long as they are well defined, can be extremely useful study tools. However, a goal by itself will not necessarily help an individual achieve a particular objective. Instead, a goal is just a declaration of a particular objective that the individual wishes to achieve. As a result, it is important for an individual to make sure that each study session is moving the individual towards accomplishing his or her goals. The best way for an individual to make sure that he or she is moving towards accomplishing his or her goals is by using a series of simple goal-oriented techniques.
First, it is important for an individual to identify and understand how to avoid any internal or external factors that have an effect on whether or not the individual will be able to achieve his or her goals. In other words, the individual should take the time to determine what distractions, which necessities such as eating or sleeping, and what other foreseeable problems or needs might get in the way of the individual accomplishing each goal that he or she has set. The individual can then try to work around these factors or avoid them as much as possible so the individual can continue moving towards each of his or her goals. Secondly, if the individual has set a large goal that he or she wishes to accomplish, the individual may want to establish a series of smaller goals that the individual can complete in order to achieve that larger goal. For example, an individual's primary goal might be to pass an exam that he or she needs to take a week from now and the individual needs to study six chapters in order to understand the material completely. Since the individual knows that he or she needs to study six chapters of information, that individual might set a goal to study a single chapter each night in order to study all six chapters before the exam. Finally, the most important thing that an individual can do to make sure that he or she is moving towards accomplishing his or her goals is to stay focused on achieving a single goal at a time, as the individual may become distracted if he or she is attempting to accomplish too much at once.
