Test anxiety can be a major problem for an individual that is attempting to prepare for an exam because it can interfere with the individual's studying. This not only makes it more difficult for the individual to review the material, but it also makes it more likely that the individual will be anxious while he or she is taking an exam because the individual realizes that he or she has not studied the material as well as he or she should have. As a result, it is essential for an individual to make sure that he or she does not allow excessive nervousness to prevent that individual from studying the material. However, it can often be difficult for an individual to control his or her anxiety, especially when that anxiety has already begun to spiral out of control.
Fortunately, there are techniques that an individual can use to make sure that he or she is more likely to remain calm, focused, and ultimately less anxious about a particular exam. First, an individual should try not to focus too much on how much he or she does not understand, but rather focus on the specific material that he or she does understand while the individual is studying. The individual should of course study the material that he or she does not understand, but the individual should try to recognize that he or she understands more material than he or she might believe. This will allow the individual to retain a positive mood while he or she is studying and will prevent the individual from falling victim to the false belief that he or she cannot pass the exam. Second, the individual should make sure to study the material as thoroughly as possible by using a variety of different study techniques prior to the exam so the individual knows the material as well as he or she possibly can. The goal shouldn't be for the individual to study until he or she drops, but rather to learn the material as best he or she can so the individual will be more comfortable with the material during the exam. Finally, the individual should make sure to be well rested before the exam and should make sure to arrive at the exam early. This will allow the individual to mentally prepare him- or herself for the exam and make sure that the individual is not beginning the exam in a rushed, exhausted, or panicked state.
