CLEP Test

CLEP

The College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) allows candidates to get college credits by passing one or more of the 34 available assessments. Candidates can use what they have already learned in previous classes, through working, with specialized training or through internships. By passing one CLEP test, a candidate could get 3-12 college credits (contingent upon the particular college’s rules about it). This would save time and money and allow candidates to move past the basic classes in college in order to take something else that is more suitable to a chosen field of study. CLEP tests also help in cases where a person needs more credits in order to graduate. Candidates can also use CLEP tests to demonstrate an understanding of math or a foreign language for eligibility purposes.

CLEP tests fall into the categories of:

• Composition and literature

• Foreign languages

• History and social sciences

• Science and mathematics

• Business

These computer-based tests last an hour and a half. All of them, except for English Composition with Essay, are in multiple-choice format. Certain tests also have written answers required. The majority of these tests are designed to cover what would be learned in a single semester, but there are exams that cover more. Since a candidate’s score depends upon how many questions are answered right, it is better to answer every question, even if guessing is required. Candidates get a point for every one answered correctly. Candidates will get their score right away when a test is finished (except for English Composition with Essay). The raw score will be converted to a scaled score between 20 and 80.
