How to Construct an Essay

There are a variety of situations in which an individual may have to prove his or her ability to communicate through his or her writing. However, the most common reason that an individual will have to use his or her ability to write is in order to complete an essay. Many exams include essay questions and many people will have to write essays as part of an application or in order to complete a class assignment. As a result, it is essential for an individual to understand how to construct an effective essay.

Fortunately, this process can usually be broken down into several steps that an individual can use to make sure that each essay is as effective as possible. First, the individual should take a few minutes to write down any information related to the specific topic that he or she needs to write about that the individual believes may be important. This step is sometimes referred to as brainstorming, as it allows the individual to let his or her ideas stream forth, like rain from a storm, down onto the page. The goal of this step is not necessarily for the individual to come up with ideas that he or she will definitely use, but rather for the individual to identify anything that the individual might be able to use. Second, the individual should create a quick outline for the structure of the essay. This outline should structure the essay so that the first paragraph established is an introduction, the middle paragraphs are the body of the essay, and the final paragraph is a conclusion that restates the main idea of the essay. The individual should then write the essay making sure to follow the outline. The individual should make sure that the introduction of the essay establishes the main idea that the individual is attempting to prove or the idea that the individual is attempting to expand upon by writing his or her essay. Each body paragraph should offer examples and details that support the main idea of the essay, and the concluding paragraph should simply restate the main idea of the essay and quickly summarize the information that the individual explained in the body of the essay. Once the individual has written his or her essay, the individual should go back and carefully read over the essay to make sure that there are no mistakes and that everything the individual has written makes sense.
