To Cram or Not to Cram?

In order for an individual to perform well on a particular exam, it is essential for that individual to find an effective way of studying the material that the exam covers. However, it may not always be possible for an individual to carefully study everything that he or she needs to know in the time that the individual has available. As a result, it may be necessary for an individual to cram in order to study all of the material that he or she needs to know. Cramming simply refers to the process of studying a large amount of material very quickly, which can sometimes be extremely useful for an individual that only has a very limited amount of time available. The problem with cramming is that it is not actually a suitable alternative to careful studying in every situation and it can actually hinder the individual's ability to perform well on assignments, exams, and other tasks. Fortunately, there are methods that an individual can use in order to minimize the problems associated with cramming.

First, if the individual is certain that he or she does not have enough time to study carefully for a particular exam, the individual should make sure to skim each section or chapter for main points in order to identify only the points that he or she should focus on while cramming. This will allow the individual to focus his or her studying on the most important information and avoid spending his or her limited amount of time on less important topics. Secondly, the individual should not waste time on attempting to study anything that will require a long time to understand or review as this will only use up time that the individual could be using to understand or review other topics more effectively. In other words, the individual's goal should be to get a basic idea of all the topics that are covered, but the individual should only focus on studying the material that he or she will have time to review again later. Finally, the best way for an individual to avoid the problems that can be caused by cramming is to avoid cramming whenever possible. In fact, cramming should only be used as a last resort, as it not only causes an individual to become more anxious, but it also prevents an individual from understanding the material as effectively as he or she should.
