Understanding the Purpose of the Test

In order for an individual to study for a particular exam, it is essential for that individual to be able to focus on the most important topics that will be covered on the exam. However, it can sometimes be difficult for an individual to identify exactly what will be covered on an exam even if the individual has taken very careful notes or has an in-depth outline. As a result, an individual may want to identify the purpose of an exam so that he or she may be able to better recognize the material that the exam will cover. Each exam, whether it is a class-specific exam or standardized exam, has a specific area of expertise that the exam is designed to assess. If an individual can identify the specific kind of knowledge or skills that the exam's designers are looking for, that individual will be able to identify the topics that are most important as well.

There are several ways that an individual can find the purpose of an exam. First, if an individual has an outline for the exam, the individual should check to see if the purpose of the exam is defined outright. Sometimes, professors and exam designers will actually pass out outlines that make it very clear that the exam has a specific purpose. If the outline does not define the purpose of the exam, the individual should focus on any areas that are weighted more heavily than other areas or any topics that seem to be covered in more detail. This is because the designers of each specific exam are always very careful to construct the exam from the points that they believe are most important, and the areas that have more topics or are weighted more heavily are almost always areas that the exam's designers believe are more important than other parts of the exam. Third, an individual may want to obtain a practice exam for the exam, if one is available, because this will actually allow the individual to see the types of questions and the specific material that the exam's designers are attempting to assess. This can sometimes be more useful than an outline, as it allows the individual to determine the purpose of the exam from the questions themselves. Finally, if the exam is a class-specific exam, the individual may want to just ask the professor about what material is included. Most professors will at least attempt to point the individual in the right direction by explaining what the exam is designed to assess.
