There are a variety of situations in which an individual may have to prove his or her ability to communicate through his or her writing. However, one of the most common situations in which an individual will have to prove his or her writing ability is if the individual has to write a research paper. A research paper, in many ways, is actually just a large essay that requires an individual to prove his or her statements by using information from outside sources. However, writing a research paper can sometimes be overwhelming, so it is important for an individual to find techniques that will make it easier for the individual to research and write a paper. As a result, there are certain tips that an individual writing a research paper may want to keep in mind.

First, an individual may find that it is easier to break the research paper down into an outline before even starting the paper. The easiest way for an individual to do this is by stating the main idea that the individual is attempting to prove, defend, or expand upon and listing any details that might help defend or expand upon that idea. This allows the individual to identify the key topics that he or she will probably need to research in order to complete the paper. If the individual has no idea how to defend the main idea of his or her paper, the individual should conduct some general research by looking through various encyclopedias, books, and other references or by searching online in order to find out more about the topic. Once the individual has created an outline and identified any topics that he or she needs to research, the individual may actually want to search for details that could be used to weaken his or her main idea. The individual, by identifying arguments that could potentially counter his or her argument, may be able to include details that weaken these counterarguments and strengthen the overall idea that the paper is attempting to establish. The individual should also make sure that each example and detail that he or she includes in his or her paper is relevant and that each detail actually helps defend the main idea of the paper. Finally, the individual should make sure that he or she knows how his or her research paper should be structured as the exact format that an individual needs to use can vary from class to class.
